Administration
In smaller counties, the County Judge presides over the constitutional court. However, in larger counties, county courts at law help manage the caseloads and have separate judges. In Galveston County, there are three county courts at law.

The district courts are under the administration of the district clerk. The district clerk is also an elected position, with a 4 year term. The duties of the district clerk are separated into recordkeeping, finance, administrative, and miscellaneous. Each county has 3-8 district courts, and these are the main trial courts in Texas.

There are 4 Justice of the Peace precincts in Galveston County. Justice of the Peace courts can hear Class C misdemeanor and traffic cases that are punishable by only a fine. They can hear civil cases that are seeking to recover up to $20,000, tenant/landlord disputes, and truancy cases. They can also conduct inquests.
